Surrender to Love

Wednesday Wisdom. Surrender to Love.

Today, I am leading a contemplative day of prayer at the lovely and restful Santa Sabina center in Northern California. My theme is embracing surrender in our hearts and in our lives. I will utilize my book, Seeking Surrender, has the focal point of this retreat.

As I was reading through my book in preparation for leading this day, I was drawn to a remark Brother Rene made in one of his letters to me.

“It dawns on me that one can surrender to God because God is love. If one didn’t trust in this love, surrender would be very hard.”

Recently my 92-year old mother had a fall, and needed hip surgery. She is currently in rehab, and will move into assisted living once she can regain more mobility. My sisters will be packing up her house this weekend, and moving her bed along with some of her belongings into the facility. I am so grateful to them for all they are doing.

This is emotional for all of us. I will miss the intimacy of being with my mother in the comfort of her home. I’ve been feeling a lot of anxiety and fear, and Brother Rene’s remark reminds me that in the grief, sadness, and worry, love is present. We are surrendering to love and awakening that truth has started shifted something within me.

Surrender is an act of love. God’s love for us, and our love for God. It is through Love, with Love, and in Love that surrendering is happening. It’s all happening in love!

Wind blown.

In this moment, I hold on to what Theresa of Avila wrote: “The important thing is not to think much, but to love much.” I’ve noticed that when my head is spinning with too much thinking about all the unknowns, I am overwhelmed with fear.  So my prayer is to stay in the moment, trusting in the power and presence of love.

Pause and Reflect:

  • What do you need to surrender to love right now?
